What Are the Benefits of Using Dental Mouth Guards/Night Mouth Guards?

  • Protect your teeth from wear, fractures, and damage caused by grinding and clenching.
  • Alleviate jaw pain, headaches, and other symptoms associated with bruxism.
  • Improve sleep quality by reducing grinding noises and interruptions.
  • Enhance overall oral health and prevent the need for costly dental treatments.

How Do Dental Mouth Guards/Night Guards Work?

Dental mouth guards, also known as night guards, create a protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth, preventing them from grinding against each other during sleep. By absorbing the forces generated by grinding and clenching, mouth guards help alleviate pressure on the jaw joint and reduce the risk of dental issues such as tooth wear, fractures, and TMJ disorders.

Who Can Benefit from Dental Mouth Guards/Night Guards?

Anyone who suffers from bruxism or teeth grinding can benefit from dental mouth guards. Whether you grind your teeth at night or during the day, our custom-fitted mouth guards provide effective protection and relief from jaw pain and discomfort. Additionally, athletes who play sports can benefit from wearing mouth guards to protect their teeth from injury during play.

Teeth Grindings & Teeth Clenching

Bruxism is when people grind or clench their teeth unconsciously, often while they sleep or during the day. It’s a common condition that can cause pain and dental problems if left untreated. Several things can cause bruxism, like stress, anxiety, or having teeth that aren’t aligned correctly.

Bruxism can be painful and even damaging to your teeth. That’s why it’s essential to get treatment to relieve pain and prevent further problems. We can help by recommending solutions like wearing a mouth guard, the least expensive dental appliance you can get to protect all your teeth and prevent costly dental treatments.

Teeth grinding results in dental abfractions at the gum line.  Enamel is thinnest at the gum line.  Constant teeth grinding breaks the thin enamel at the gum line and causes teeth sensitivity to hot and cold.

How Are Night Guards Customized?

At Perfect Smile Dental Group, we take impressions of your teeth to create a precise mold for your custom-fitted mouth guard. Our dental lab then crafts the guard to fit your teeth perfectly, ensuring maximum comfort and effectiveness. With our personalized approach, you can trust that your night guard will fit your teeth snugly and provide optimal protection.

How Should Dental Mouth Guards Be Cared for?

Proper care and maintenance are essential for prolonging the lifespan of your night guard. Avoid brushing your night guard with toothbrushes and toothpastes as this can create scratches that harbor bacteria that produce odor in the night guard.  After each use, soak the night guard in a cup of water with a cleaning tablet such as Retainer Brite Tablets. Store the mouth guard in a clean, ventilated case when not in use, and avoid exposing it to high temperatures or harsh chemicals.

Regularly inspect the mouth guard for signs of wear or damage, and replace it as needed to ensure continued protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Night guard is a dental appliance that rests comfortably against your teeth and gums that protects your teeth, dental fillings, crowns and dental veneers from damage when you grind or clench your teeth during the daytime or when you are sleeping.

Nightguards cost about $300 to $500, depending on your dentist, location, and insurance plan.

Night guard is custom made by skilled professionals to accurately fit and protect your teeth.  It uses high quality durability materials to ensure its durability and effectiveness. While night guard may appear expensive, it is less expensive compared to the alternative outcome of having to restore all your teeth with dental crowns from grinding & clenching.

Night guards have an average lifespan of 1-5 years, depending on how rigorous the patients grind their teeth. Signs that you will need a new night guard are cracks, tears, holes, or any other visible damage.

Night guard does not stop you from clenching or grinding your teeth; however, it does shield and cushion the teeth from excessive wear that can eventually cause the teeth to crack or break.

Over-the-counter night guard will work for some people but not others.  Over-the-counter night guards are not durable & do not fit well compared to custom made night guards you get from your dentist.

Night guard can be kept clean by soaking it in a cup of water with a retainer cleaning tablet each morning.

Properly fitted mouth guards should not interfere with speech or breathing. Our custom-fitted mouth guards are designed to fit comfortably and securely, allowing for natural speech and unobstructed breathing while providing effective protection against teeth grinding and clenching.

While our custom-fitted guards are designed to fit comfortably from the start, minor adjustments may be necessary to achieve the perfect fit. If you experience any discomfort or irritation while wearing your mouth guard, give Perfect Smile a call. Avoid attempting to adjust the night guard yourself, as this could affect its effectiveness and compromise your oral health.
