When patients experience tooth loss and does not support the face with dentures or dental implants, the dimension of the face changes over time.

Denture Home Care

Dentures should be kept clean each day to avoid development of fungus in the mouth by soaking the dentures in a cup of water with a denture cleaning tablet, such as Polident or Efferdent.  If there are food debris between the denture teeth, a denture toothbrush should be used to remove them. Avoid brushing your dentures with your toothbrush and toothpaste because this can create scratches in the dentures that allow bacteria to reside and create bad odor.

Frequently Asked Questions

A set of complete dentures for the top & bottom cost on average around $3000-3,500.

When dentures are first placed, they can rub against the gums and cheeks and cause irritation.  Several Adjustments to the dentures must be made so they can be comfortable and fit well for you.

Dentures can last between 5- 10 years but can last longer depending on how well you maintained the dentures.

Depending on how many teeth you have, different types of dentures are recommended for you by your dentist.  Complete dentures are recommended for patients with no teeth remaining.  Partial dentures are recommended for patients with remaining teeth.

After tooth loss, without wearing dentures, the dimension of the face starts to change and lose its shape.  You will experience sagging skin around the eyes and mouth. Eventually, it will result in the appearance of a “collapsed face” due to significant bone loss.

Dentures are usually made with plastic teeth.  The most natural looking dentures are made with porcelain teeth. Porcelain denture teeth are more esthetic and more resistant to wear and tear.

Implant-supported dentures have the highest retention and natural-looking appearance, as they closely resemble the function and appearance of natural teeth.

Dentures should be wore during the day and soaked in a cup with denture cleaning tablet to disinfect the bacteria and to prevent fungus from forming inside the mouth.

Although you no longer have teeth, your mouth and gum do need to be kept clean by gently brushing your gums and kept clean with mouth rinse to prevent oral fungus and bad odors.

Dental implant is the better option than dentures because they mimic your real teeth. With dental implants, there is no hassle with removing your denture to clean after a meal.  Dental implant function, look and feel like your real teeth.

Foods to avoid with dentures are Hard foods and chewy sticky foods.

Avoid Hard foods: Hard candy, nuts, chips, popcorn because they can cause dentures to slip or crack.

Avoid chewy sticky foods: Sticky candy can pull the dentures off.  Sticky candy can trap bacteria beneath the denture leading to irritation or fungus infections.

Dentures are made from acrylic and plastic teeth and can break when biting into hard foods.  You should not snap into an apple as this can break your denture.  You can still enjoy your apply by cutting it up into small pieces.

Dentures has less chewing force compared to natural teeth.  Steak can be difficult to chew, but you don’t have to avoid steak entirely. You can still enjoy steak by cutting it up into small pieces.
