Dangers Of Gum Disease
Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss for the majority of adults in the United States. Gum Disease is an active Infection in your mouth that can cause Heart Disease, Stroke, Diabetes, Premature Birth Babies, Pancreatic Cancer, Kidney Disease and dementia. Many people have gum disease but are not aware of it.
What is a Deep Teeth Cleaning?
If patient is diagnosed with gum disease, the treatment is a deep teeth cleaning, not a regular cleaning. A deep teeth cleaning removes the calcium buildup, stain, food debris and bacteria under the gum to help the gum and bone to heal. A routine dental cleaning cleans the teeth above the gum and does not treat the gum disease.
The type of cleaning appropriate for you depends on the diagnosis of your gum health. For the dentist to determine what type of cleaning is appropriate for you, dental x-rays must be taken to evaluate the bone level around your teeth. On average, bone level around your teeth should be about 1-2mm below the enamel cap. Signs of significant bone loss around your teeth exceeding 2mm or gingival probing depth of 4-5mm qualifies as periodontitis (gum disease). When a patient is diagnosed as having gum disease, a regular routine cleaning will not address the gum disease condition because a routine cleaning doesn’t reach below the gum. Since deep cleaning requires the dentist to clean below the gum, anesthesia is administered prior to the procedure.
For patients diagnosed with gum disease, a deep teeth cleaning is recommended because this type of cleaning removes the buildup of plaque, tartar and harmful bacteria below the gum on the surface of the roots. Long term progression of Gum disease can cause teeth to move and eventually fall out. Once a patient has been diagnosed with gum disease, the disease condition is not reversible but with deep teeth cleaning and improved oral hygiene, the progression of the gum disease can be slowed down or halted to prevent further loss of the bone around your teeth. Following deep teeth cleaning, the dentist will irrigate the gum with an antibacterial solution to clean out harmful bacteria. It is important to see your dentist for periodontal maintenance to maintain your gum health after a deep teeth cleaning.
SENSITIVITY TO HOT & COLD
It is normal to experience some sensitivity to hot and cold after getting a deep cleaning. The sensitivity will subside and go away with time. Give the tooth some time to heal. If there is sensitivity, you can use SENSODYNE SENSITIVITY Toothpaste to decrease the sensitivity.
AVOID: whitening toothpaste, acidic foods like Lemon, cherry, grapefruit.
Post-Operative Instructions & Home Care
Deep Teeth Cleaning is for patients with “Gum disease” that shows bone loss. Dental Deep Cleaning is a procedure that requires numbing the patient before removing the bacteria and buildup off the root surface below the gum. Long term progression of Gum disease can cause teeth to move and eventually fall out. After Deep Teeth cleaning, it is important to see your dentist every 3 months for periodontal maintenance to maintain your gum health.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a routine dental cleaning and a deep dental cleaning?
A routine cleaning is recommended for patients that do not have gum disease. During routine dental cleaning, the dentist uses a cavitron that vibrates at high frequency to remove tartar, plaque buildup and stains off the teeth above the gum.
A deep cleaning is recommended for patients di gum disease. During deep dental cleaning, the dentist administers local anesthesia to numb the teeth and gum before using a cavitron to remove tartar, plaque buildup, stains and harmful bacteria below the gum.
How much does a dental deep cleaning cost?
A deep cleaning costs about $150-$250 per quadrant, so a full mouth deep cleaning cost about $600-$1,000.
How long does deep teeth cleaning take?
A deep teeth cleaning takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour. Usually, one side of the mouth is cleaned at each appointment.
Is dental deep cleaning painful?
Dental deep cleaning does not hurt. Local anesthesia will be administered by the dentist to numb the gum and teeth before the deep cleaning.
Why is deep cleaning teeth so expensive?
A deep cleaning is more expensive than a routine dental cleaning because it is more invasive and time consuming. The dentist administers local anesthesia to numb the teeth and gum before performing the deep cleaning.
Is a dental deep cleaning ever really necessary?
Once a patient is diagnosed with gum disease, a deep cleaning is necessary to remove harmful bacteria and buildup below the gum. A deep cleaning removes the tartar buildup, staining, food debris and bacteria under the gum to help the gum and bone to heal. A routine dental cleaning cleans the teeth above the gum and does not treat the gum disease.
Can a dentist do a regular cleaning instead of deep cleaning?
No. A routine dental cleaning cleans will not remove the harmful bacterial under the gum to treat the gum disease.
How often should deep cleaning be done?
Deep cleaning should be done once every 2 years. After a deep cleaning, patient has to come back every 3 months for periodontal maintenance to remove the harmful bacteria and maintain the health of the bone and gum.
Can you eat after deep cleaning?
Once the numbness wears off, you can eat right away.
How long does deep cleaning take to heal?
It takes about 1 week for the gums to heal after a deep cleaning. During the healing phase, you may experience some bleeding & swelling of the gums and teeth sensitive. Avoid acidic food and whitening toothpaste that can worsen teeth sensitivity. You can use Sensodyne sensitivity & gum toothpaste to help reduce sensitivity.
Why does my mouth hurt so bad after getting my teeth cleaned?
Patients experience soreness of the gum and teeth sensitivity after a deep cleaning because the roots and gums are clean and free of tartar and harmful bacteria. It took a while for tartar to build up and cover the roots of your teeth. Your teeth got used to the roots being covered. After a deep cleaning, the roots are no longer covered by the tartar and bacteria, so your teeth feel more sensitive to hot and cold.
Gum soreness after a deep cleaning can be due to 2 factors: 1) Gum inflammation caused by the gum disease bacteria 2) Pressure applied under the gum to remove tartar buildup & bacteria at the roots.
When gum disease bacteria infect the gums, the gums get irrigated and become swollen and inflamed. When the dentist applies pressure to remove tartar buildup & bacteria under your gum, it contributes to the soreness you experience after a deep cleaning.
Things you can do to decrease teeth sensitivity & gum soreness.
1) Use Sensodyne sensitivity & gum toothpaste to help reduce sensitivity.
2) Avoid acidic food and whitening toothpaste that can worsen teeth sensitivity.
3) Take over-the-counter pain medications such as Ibuprofen.
What is Periodontal Maintenance?
After a deep cleaning, patient has to come back every 3 months for periodontal maintenance to remove the harmful bacteria and maintain the health of the bone and gum.

Dr. Yang is very professional and does not suggest unneeded work just to line his pockets. He’s helpful and completely explains everything. His new assistant Jennifer is AMAZING!!! She is the nicest and most sympathetic assistant I’ve met in a long time. Dentist visits are often not the most pleasant, but the team at Dr. Yang’s office try their best to make it one. This location is located in an older strip mall but don't let that scare you away! Inside you'll find above all a CLEAN, SUPER cute dental office! Dr. Yang and his entire staff are great! I hadn't been to the dentist in a LONG time because of a bad experience I had with another dental office. I'm also a BIG baby...I can't handle pain! Dr. Yang did an AMAZING job at numbing me, so I felt absolutely NOTHING! I thought for sure I'd feel pain once everything wore off, but I didn't! My bite is also PERFECTLY aligned! At other dental visits elsewhere, my bite has usually ALWAYS ended up slightly off which causes a bunch of problems later. Thank you Dr. Yang and staff for quality pain frVerifiedGaby G.2024-09-12Everyone at Perfect Smile Dental is kind, professional and they all take pride in their work. The dentist was very thorough in explaining every step to me and the assistant was also very friendly as well as the receptionist. Great service!VerifiedMarisa C.2024-05-02Yes this is a long review but they deserve it!! I had a positive experience here and would recommend this dentist to anyone. (I actually already have!) Due to a variety of factors, I had not been to the dentist in at least 2-3 years. I was in desperate need of a cleaning. I researched online which local dentists took my Medi-Cal plan and had availability. I read reviews to check which dentists were known for a gentle and safe approach. I obviously found the right one - which turned out to be important because I had to come back more times to fill several cavities. This was extremely scary for me. But Dr. Yang, Sabrina and Magdalena made the whole process as comfortable, efficient, and painless as possible. They answered all my questions, continually checked in & paused as needed, and let me know in advance everything they were doing and why. I also have never been to a dentist that had so much useful technology. The space itself was modern and clean. I appreciated that they had mouthwash in the bathroom lol. I actually feel more confident now that my teeth are clean and healthy. I hope I can come back for my appt already scheduled for the fall. Anyone who has sensory issues or dental anxiety (or just wants healthier teeth//to have a more positive and educated experience at the dentist) could benefit from making an appt here.VerifiedHeang L.2024-03-25I found this dentist when I was searching for a Dentist in Whittier. Due to severe grinding, most of my teeth have problems. I hesitated going to the dentist for years until my dental bridge broke. When I came to see Dr. Yang, his office was clean, welcoming and professional. The staff was really friendly. Dr. Yang was very through during the exam. He took photos of my teeth and showed me on the X-rays where I had cavities and where I needed to have dental crowns to prevent my teeth from breaking. He also told me I needed a night guard to protect my teeth from breaking when I grind my teeth when I am sleeping. I was very impressed with his attention to details. He took his time in explaining and answering all my questions. I don't think I have had a dentist that cared enough to take the time to explain everything so I can understand what was going on in my mouth. I had the best cleaning. My teeth never felt so clean before! I have been coming here for my dental needs and have been very happy with their customer service that I decided to stay with this dentist for my dental implants. I highly recommend this office!Verifiedluis s.2024-03-05Recently went saturday 3/2/2024 to get a tooth extracted from the minute I called towards the end of getting tooth removed front desk & dentist showed professionalism. They saw me as soon as possible when I broke my filling and tooth and wasted no time in getting me prepped and ready for a crown. Dr. Yang is amazing. I feel very comfortable with him and his staff. He always makes sure I'm alright and not in pain before proceeding with the next step and explains everything thoroughly. I'm very happy I found him and his clinic. I couldn't ask for a better team. I definitely recommend him. 10/10 best dentist!VerifiedGilbert P.2023-10-14I cannot say enough good things about this office. Dr. Yen is a master of his craft, i have complete confidence in his ability. I hadn't had dental check in 15 plus years and he found all my problems. I will be returning to him to address them in the near future. The front desk cleric Magdalena (hope this is correct spelling) is very knowledgeable, she will guild you thru the process with ease. It never good news to be told you need dental work, but she makes it as easy as possible. I will update this after my dental work is done and fully recovered. Furthermore, they give you an easy-to-understand paperwork detailing everything just be sure to double check the back page. I know I'm forgetting something it will be in the next update.
