What is a Dental Exam?
A Comprehensive oral exam is performed during your first visit to our dental clinic. It involves examining the head, neck and mouth. It is for new patients or those that have not had one in recent years. A series of digital x-rays and intraoral photos will be taken of your teeth for the dentist to evaluate your teeth, gum, and oral health. The dentist will look at your teeth in the mouth and on the x-rays to check for any cavities (caries), infections at the roots, signs of bone loss due to gum disease and signs of bruxism (grinding/clenching teeth). The dentist also looks at the jaw joints and alignment of the teeth to determine if the joints work properly and whether you need orthodontic treatment (Invisalign, braces). Oral cancer screening is done to detect any signs of cancers on the tongue or the floor of the mouth. Following the evaluation, the dentist will show you areas of concern on the X-rays and intraoral photos.
Based on the evidence seen on the digital x-rays, intraoral photos and intraoral examination, the dentist will diagnose and provide you with treatment recommendations that will address the conditions of your teeth, existing restorations (such as old fillings and old crowns), gum and oral health to help bring your oral health back to an optimum level. The dentist will provide you with the pros vs. cons of each dental procedure starting with the most ideal treatment option to the least ideal treatment option. At this time, the dentist will answer any questions and concerns that you may have. A treatment coordinator will review with you the treatment plan, insurance benefits and finance options available to you, so we can help bring back your healthy smile. Dental procedures on the treatment plan do not have to be done all at once. Treatments can be done in phases starting with the most urgent concerns to the least urgent concerns.
Importance of Dental Exams
Our dental clinic recommends that all patients get a dental checkup and cleaning at least once every six months. By scheduling routine checkups and cleanings, the dentist will be able to detect early signs of cavities that if left unattended can lead to a root canal. Treating cavities when they are small is less invasive and less expensive. Waiting too long to schedule routine checkups and cleanings will allow plaque to build up, which may lead to inflamed gum, gum disease, cavities, root canal, and a costly dental procedure. Comprehensive exam and periodic (routine) exam are recommended for early detection and treatment of cavities before they progress into the nerve that results in a need for a root canal and a crown for the tooth.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a dental exam?
Dental exam varies depending on your geographic location but typically range between $100-$175.
What happens during a dental exam?
During a complete dental exam, the dental assistant takes a full mouth series of x-rays for the dentist to evaluate the health of the teeth, gum and to screen for oral cancer. Oral exams and x-rays allow the dentist to identify problems such as cavities, gum disease, or oral cancer in their early stages.
Do I have to take x-rays for a dental checkup?
Dental x-rays are the standard of care during a dental exam. X-rays allow the dentist to detect cavities between the teeth, infection at the root and oral pathology (cancer) that cannot be detected with the naked eyes.
It it safe to take dental x-rays?
Dental x-rays are significantly safer than traditional film x-rays. The patient is covered with a lead apron during dental x-rays.
Can I get a dental checkup without taking x-rays?
Dental x-rays are the standard of care during a dental exam. Without X-rays it is impossible for the dentist to detect cavities between the teeth, infection at the root and oral pathology (cancer).
How long do oral exams take?
Dental Exams last about 60 minutes. During the 60 minutes, dental x-rays are taken so the dentist can evaluate the teeth, gum and oral cavity. The dentist will explain the findings and make treatment recommendations to the patient.

Dr. Yang is very professional and does not suggest unneeded work just to line his pockets. He’s helpful and completely explains everything. His new assistant Jennifer is AMAZING!!! She is the nicest and most sympathetic assistant I’ve met in a long time. Dentist visits are often not the most pleasant, but the team at Dr. Yang’s office try their best to make it one. You definitely won't be disappointed!

This location is located in an older strip mall but don't let that scare you away! Inside you'll find above all a CLEAN, SUPER cute dental office! Dr. Yang and his entire staff are great! I hadn't been to the dentist in a LONG time because of a bad experience I had with another dental office. I'm also a BIG baby...I can't handle pain! Dr. Yang did an AMAZING job at numbing me, so I felt absolutely NOTHING! I thought for sure I'd feel pain once everything wore off, but I didn't! My bite is also PERFECTLY aligned! At other dental visits elsewhere, my bite has usually ALWAYS ended up slightly off which causes a bunch of problems later. Thank you Dr. Yang and staff for quality pain frVerifiedGaby G.2024-09-12Everyone at Perfect Smile Dental is kind, professional and they all take pride in their work. I have been a patient for about a year and my doctor has taking care of the many issues I faced with Mt teeth. He talks me through my issues and gives me solutions and options.VerifiedErica H.2024-08-29I was having gum sensitivity and they quickly took me in and was such an easy process for me to be seen with no hassles. The dentist was very thorough in explaining every step to me and the assistant was also very friendly as well as the receptionist. Great service!VerifiedMarisa C.2024-05-02Yes this is a long review but they deserve it!! I had a positive experience here and would recommend this dentist to anyone. (I actually already have!) Due to a variety of factors, I had not been to the dentist in at least 2-3 years. I was in desperate need of a cleaning. I researched online which local dentists took my Medi-Cal plan and had availability. I read reviews to check which dentists were known for a gentle and safe approach. I obviously found the right one - which turned out to be important because I had to come back more times to fill several cavities. This was extremely scary for me. But Dr. Yang, Sabrina and Magdalena made the whole process as comfortable, efficient, and painless as possible. They answered all my questions, continually checked in & paused as needed, and let me know in advance everything they were doing and why. I also have never been to a dentist that had so much useful technology. The space itself was modern and clean. I appreciated that they had mouthwash in the bathroom lol. I actually feel more confident now that my teeth are clean and healthy. I hope I can come back for my appt already scheduled for the fall. Anyone who has sensory issues or dental anxiety (or just wants healthier teeth//to have a more positive and educated experience at the dentist) could benefit from making an appt here.VerifiedHeang L.2024-03-25I found this dentist when I was searching for a Dentist in Whittier. Due to severe grinding, most of my teeth have problems. I hesitated going to the dentist for years until my dental bridge broke. When I came to see Dr. Yang, his office was clean, welcoming and professional. The staff was really friendly. Dr. Yang was very through during the exam. He took photos of my teeth and showed me on the X-rays where I had cavities and where I needed to have dental crowns to prevent my teeth from breaking. He also told me I needed a night guard to protect my teeth from breaking when I grind my teeth when I am sleeping. I was very impressed with his attention to details. He took his time in explaining and answering all my questions. I don't think I have had a dentist that cared enough to take the time to explain everything so I can understand what was going on in my mouth. I had the best cleaning. My teeth never felt so clean before! I have been coming here for my dental needs and have been very happy with their customer service that I decided to stay with this dentist for my dental implants. I highly recommend this office!Verifiedluis s.2024-03-05Recently went saturday 3/2/2024 to get a tooth extracted from the minute I called towards the end of getting tooth removed front desk & dentist showed professionalism. They saw me as soon as possible when I broke my filling and tooth and wasted no time in getting me prepped and ready for a crown. Dr. Yang is amazing. I feel very comfortable with him and his staff. He always makes sure I'm alright and not in pain before proceeding with the next step and explains everything thoroughly. I'm very happy I found him and his clinic. I couldn't ask for a better team. I definitely recommend him. 10/10 best dentist!VerifiedGilbert P.2023-10-14I cannot say enough good things about this office. Dr. Yen is a master of his craft, i have complete confidence in his ability. I hadn't had dental check in 15 plus years and he found all my problems. I will be returning to him to address them in the near future. The front desk cleric Magdalena (hope this is correct spelling) is very knowledgeable, she will guild you thru the process with ease. It never good news to be told you need dental work, but she makes it as easy as possible. I will update this after my dental work is done and fully recovered. Furthermore, they give you an easy-to-understand paperwork detailing everything just be sure to double check the back page. I know I'm forgetting something it will be in the next update.
